چکیده
The numerical investigation of drop deformation and breakup under simple shear is a basis for theoretical studies of emulsification and mixing. A three-dimensional Couette flow without gravity is considered; the matrix liquid is bounded at the top and bottom by two parallel horizontal plates and the liquid drop is suspended there. The boundaries move horizontally, and generate a simple shear flow. The fluid and flow properties, such as viscosities, Reynolds number and plate separation, influence the subsequent evolution. The pinching off of daughter drops is investigated with the use of volume-of-fluid methods. The convergence of such methods, particularly with respect to drop size distributions, is evaluated, and a novel parabolic reconstruction of the interfacial tension force for the VOF method (PROST) is introduced.

Dynamics of Macro–Nano Mechanical Systems; Fixed Interfacial Multiscale Method
The continuum based approaches don’t provide the correct physics in atomic scales. On the other hand, the molecular based approaches are limited by the length and simulated process time. As an attractive alternative, this paper proposes the Fixed Interfacial Multiscale Method (FIMM) for computationally and mathematically efficient modeling of solid structures. The approach is applicable to mult...
متن کاملA molecular dynamics simulation of water transport through C and SiC nanotubes: Application for desalination
In this work the conduction of ion-water solution through two discrete bundles of armchair carbon and silicon carbide nanotubes, as useful membranes for water desalination, is studied. In order that studies on different types of nanotubes be comparable, the chiral vectors of C and Si-C nanotubes are selected as (7,7) and (5,5), respectively, so that a similar volume of fluid is investigated ...

متن کاملSimulation of Two-phase Flows in Vertical Tubes with the Cfd Code Flubox
The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code FLUBOX is developed at GRS for the multidimensional simulation of two-phase flows. The single-pressure two-fluid model is used as basis of the simulation. A basic mathematical property of the two-fluid model of FLUBOX is the hyperbolic character of the convection. The numerical solution methods of FLUBOX make explicit use of the hyperbolic structure o...
متن کاملOn mixing and transport at a sheared density interface
Mixing and transport of a stratifying scalar are investigated at a density interface imbedded in a turbulent shear flow. Steady-state interfacial shear flows are generated in a laboratory water channel for layer Richardson numbers, Ri, between about 1 and 10. The flow field is made optically homogeneous, enabling the use of laser-induced fluorescence with photodiode array imaging to measure the...
